The Low-Activity Waste Pretreatment System (LAWPS) facility is planned to pretreat Hanford tank waste supernate by filtering solids and processing through ion exchange columns to remove cesium. The filtration process is achieved through dead end filtration. The effluent from ion exchange will be vitrified to produce LAW glass.

The goal of this effort was to demonstrate alternative processing approaches for filtration, ion exchange and melter off-gas treatment. To that end, dead end filtration and alternative ion exchange media were tested. Actual waste samples were retrieved from Hanford Site Tank AP-107 and were composited for testing. These composited samples were first tested with cross flow filtration and dead end filtration to determine the filter flux under typical LAWPS conditions. The material was subsequently treated for cesium removal with CST followed by vitrification using a flow through melter system. These results of these tests will be described.
