Several of the sessions at Summer School made use of anonymous polling websites to facilitate interaction among participants. Polling is an easy way to verify student understanding of concepts discussed in class. In addition, polling allows for questions to be posed that require individual critical thinking, as students are able to think independently prior to offering their own opinion. In large classes or classes with shyer students, the ability to have all students participate is key to student learning and engagement. Polling students through the use of clickers has been utilized for over a decade, but clickers can be costly. Polling websites enable students to turn their phones or computers into clickers either for free or for a small fee. In this talk, the use and effectiveness of polling using Poll Everywhere in a variety of chemical engineering courses will be demonstrated.
