(225c) Combining the Luck of the Draw with Individual Accountability in Team-Based Learning

Group work at any level in lecture-based or laboratory courses is a challenging task for the students and the instructor. Inspired by several workshops of the ASEE 2017 ChE summer school such as game-based learning, active learning, and groups and conflicts, the luck of the draw was implemented to promote individual accountability in a team-based project. This approach was used in an undergraduate level Transport Phenomena class in which the students selected a topic of research based on chance. Depending on the number of students and groups, each team picked a Transport Phenomena subject area randomly. The raffled areas included Momentum, Heat or Mass Transport. After drawing a topic, the students were assigned an open-ended project on which each group developed a problem statement with an innovative solution that involved the raffled topic area. Once the problem statement and the solution were turned-in to the instructor, a brief presentation was made to the class, but the rules stated that only one of the students from each group was responsible for this task. Again, by the luck of the draw, the presenter was selected just minutes before the presentation. After implementing this method, it is expected that all students should be accountable and engaged when working in a group and in the project. Surveys of individual performance for each group were collected to obtain a better understanding of the group dynamics through this technique. In addition, all the presentations were graded by every student in the class. This method has been applied to self-selected groups, however, to validate it, future studies should focus on randomly selected groups or instructor assigned teams.
