Cyclones are century old technology that it is easy to take it for granted as a “proven technology”. However, many fluidization processes demand much higher performance than the conventional cyclones were originally intended for. This paper will use FCC as an example to highlight the challenges that many fluidization processes commonly face and how the novel Shell cyclone technology can overcome those challenges. These challenges may include, but not limited to

  • Improving catalyst retention and reducing catalyst cost/particulate emission
  • Improving unit reliability and on-stream factorÂ
