(411a) Dynamic Displays Based on Controlled Chemical Release from Arrays of Printed Particles

The concept of enabling dynamic patterns using arrangements of precisely positioned and patterned porous particles will be discussed. Using numerical simulations and experiments, an animation of a running man is realized. The concept leverages, (a) the extreme precision of mass-producible self-folded porous capsules which can be formed with varying overall and pore size, placement and density; (b) strategies to control dispensation and positioning  the particles in well-defined arrays and (c) design strategies for controlled chemical release with both local and global control. In contrast to electronic displays, such chemical displays based on controlled release from particles do not require any wiring, back-end interfaces, interconnects, batteries or external power sources. They also enable a dynamic aspect to conventional artistic techniques such as drawing and painting. Further, such displays can be realized on both rigid and flexible substrates and are reusable.
