Advanced ultra-super critical power generation with ox-coal combustion and carbon capture appears to be a viable method for reducing coal’s carbon footprint. Accurate simulation of these systems may help to accelerate the deployment of this new technology through design and optimization. In this study we are modeling Alstom’s 15 MWth boiler simulation facility and validating our results with experimental measurements. These measurements are viewed as the largest-scale results with detailed experimental work - taken on an ox-coal system today. We demonstrate our ability to accurately model the system’s heat flux and temperature profiles by using Arches, an in-house large eddy simulation code, and by utilizing high-performance computing to enable us to resolve the critical physics of the system.
