We describe the fabrication of three dimensional cubic containers with precisely patterned nanoporosity, and their utilization in size selective sampling. We utilized mobile cubic containers to capture objects based on size exclusion. When objects were present in the fluid, those smaller than the size of the pores escaped so that on retrieval the container predominantly captured objects whose sizes were larger than the porosity of the container. Using containers with different pore sizes, we were able to capture sub-micron scale beads and live cells. Additionally, on retrieval, the containers were used to culture and hence multiply entrapped cells.
