Gasification is the thermochemical process of converting a biomass into valuable gas fuel. Several parameters affect the gasification processes efficiency, thereby affecting syn gas production and quality. In this study, the first objective was to develop and validate a downdraft gasifier simulation model by using Aspen Hysys software. The second objective was to use the validated Aspen Hysys model to investigate the effect of equivalence ratio on the syngas production of downdraft gasifier. Five different values of equivalence ratios were chosen for simulation conduction. Waste wood was used as a feed stock for all simulation cases. The Peng-Robinson equation of state with Boston-Mathias was used to estimate the physical properties in the simulation model. Hydrodynamic parameters and reaction kinetics modeling were described by this model. The developed model was validated by comparing the predicted results of syngas composition against available experimental data for different equivalence ratios. The comparison showed a good agreement between predicted and experimental results. Also, the obtained results showed that the equivalence ratio had a significant effect on the gasification process efficiency.
