Medford, A. - Presenter, Georgia Institute of Technology
In this talk I will discuss the origins and current status of the "Data Analytics for Chemical Engineers" course developed and taught at Georgia Tech. This course is designed to provide chemical engineers with a broad introduction to data science and machine learning techniques including regression, classification, clustering, and dimensional reduction. The course is currently one of two core courses in the "Data Science for the Chemical Industry" (DSCI) certificate program, a unique program that combines undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. The advantages and challenges of teaching data science to chemical engineering students at varying stages of their careers will be presented. Some pedagogical and technical aspects of the course, including the semester-long group project, the use of the Python programming language, and teaching in a fully online environment will be discussed.
