Development of Next Generation Yeast Strains for Ethanol Production from Lignocellulosic Feedstocks

Authors

DSM is a frontrunner in the development of bioconversion technologies for the production of lignocellulosic ethanol, being the first company to commercialize C5-fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae and proving this technology in pilot and commercial facilities worldwide. Since then, next generation advanced yeast strains have been developed, commercialized and produced at industrial scale, offering significantly accelerated C5-fermentation rates, improved robustness and an expanded substrate range to the market.

In taking fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass streams to the next level, DSM has established a unique IP and technology position. Breakthroughs in C5 uptake by sugar transporter engineering, by-product reduction and conversion of previously untouched carbon sources,  such as acetic acid and biorefinery waste streams, into additional ethanol are currently finding their way to commercial implementation.

We will link these proprietary technologies to industrial needs through the development of commercial yeast strains.
