Automated Cell Culture System (CompacT) for Mammalian Synthetic Biology Applications

CompacT is an automated cell culture system that enables the culturing of mammalian cell lines in a controlled, reproducible and high throughput manner. At MIT, we are using CompacT system, nick-named “Volta” to support various applications in mammalian synthetic biology, including high yield and high quality, mammalian protein producer cell lines from pre-clinical development to commercial scale manufacturing. Specifically, we are using automation for expansion and maintenance of multiple cell lines (MEF, CHO, HEK293FT and others), sub culturing, transient transfections, harvesting and plating of cells for assays, screening and off-line processing, cell counting and viability measurements. Volta delivers dramatic improvements in throughput, productivity and quality for cell-based assays and efficiently supports our endeavors in mammalian synthetic biology and cell engineering.
