Society for Biological Engineering Announces 3rdInternational Conference on Stem Cell Engineering

January 18, 2012

NEW YORK – The Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) are partnering to host the 3rdInternational Conference on Stem Cell Engineering, which will be held from April 29 to May 2, 2012, at the Sheraton Downtown in Seattle.

The meeting, which brings together engineers, biologists, and clinicians who are working on cellular therapies, is designed to accelerate progress in this increasingly important area of research. The goal of this accelerated effort is the generation of cells to advance tissue regeneration and other stem-cell-based therapies.

Keynote speakers include Robert J Deans, executive vice president of regenerative medicine at Athersys, Inc.; Gordon Keller, senior scientist at the Ontario Cancer Institute; Jeanne Loring, Professor at Scripps Research Institute; and Peter Zandstra, Canada Research Chair in Stem Cell Bioengineering The event, which is being co-chaired by Chuck Murry of the University of Washington and Sean Palecek of the University of Wisconsin, will cover strategies in:

  • Adult stem cell isolation, expansion, differentiation and bioprocessing
  • Pluripotent stem cell expansion, differentiation and bioprocessing
  • Cellular reprogramming
  • Technologies for stem cell analysis and characterization
  • Stem cell models of development and disease
  • Engineering environments to control cell fate
  • Stem cells in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
  • Clinical translation of cellular therapies
  • Vascularization
  • Immunity, inflammation, and fibrosis

Additional presenters include:

  • Irwin Bernstein (Seattle Children’s Hospital)
  • Themis Kyriakides (Yale School of Medicine)
  • Michael Laflamme (University of Washington)
  • Bill Murphy (University of Wisconsin Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center)
  • Steve Oh (Bioprocessing Technology Institute)
  • Buddy Ratner (University of Washington)
  • Jalees Rehman (University of Illinois - Chicago)
  • Fionna Watt (University of Cambridge)
  • Joe Wu (Stanford School of Medicine)

About SBE:

Established in 2004, the Society for Biological Engineering is a technological community for engineers and applied scientists integrating biology with engineering. Members of SBE come from a broad spectrum of industries and disciplines and share in SBE’s mission of realizing the benefits of bioprocessing, biomedical and biomolecular applications. http://bio.aiche.org.

About ISSCR:

The International Society for Stem Cell Research is an independent, nonprofit organization established to promote and foster the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas relating to stem cells, to encourage the general field of research involving stem cells and to promote professional and public education in all areas of stem cell research and application. http://www.isscr.org/

About AIChE:

AIChE is a professional society of more than 40,000 chemical engineers in 92 countries. Its members work in corporations, universities and government using their knowledge of chemical processes to develop safe and useful products for the benefit of society. Through its varied programs, AIChE continues to be a focal point for information exchange on the frontier of chemical engineering research in such areas as nanotechnology, sustainability, hydrogen fuels, biological and environmental engineering, and chemical plant safety and security.
