Cho, S. M.
I am a postdoctoral research associate at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in the Department of Forest Biomaterials, a role I've held since 2021 after earning my Ph.D. in Environmental Materials Science from Seoul National University, South Korea. My work focuses on carbon upcycling and emission reduction technologies, converting waste plastics and biomass into high-value materials for sustainable water purification, carbon capture, and energy solutions. I collaborate with Washington University in St. Louis on converting mixed plastic waste and contribute to the NSF-funded “Global Centers: CIRCLE” project. Additionally, I work on decarbonizing the pulp and paper industry, proposing innovative methods for chemical recovery in kraft pulping. I helped secure DOE-EERE-IEDO funding for the “CHROME” project, exploring bipolar membrane electrodialysis to cut CO? emissions. My efforts demonstrate my commitment to sustainable solutions and effective collaboration in waste management and industrial decarbonization.
