FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello, I am Samiya Miller. I'm 18 years old and was born and raised in New Jersey. I maintained over a 4.0 GPA all four years of high school while growing a love for math, science, and exploration. I am the middle child of three kids, two brothers. I was a competitive cheerleader from the age of 6 to 18 and at the age of 14, I began coaching the next generation. I am so excited to experience the HBCU culture, expand my knowledge, and gain new opportunities.
My dream is to be able to conduct and pioneer research in the chemical field, this dream was made that much more possible by the FOSSI foundation.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
I have a passion for the undiscovered; learning, testing, and exploring is where my heart lies. When I lit my first Bunsen burner to watch pieces of metal burning bright colors, I knew what kind of creations I wanted to make. Chemistry holds a special place in my mind and heart, and as I learn more, the desire to be fully immersed in chemistry only grows.
Chemistry truly is the study of the world around us. It teaches us how to use our resources to do extraordinary things like create traffic lights or heal cataracts using a Laser probe. My hope is that a creation of mine could be up there alongside great Black inventors like Garett Morgan and Patricia Bath.
FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?
I am from a working middle class family, which makes me and my family exceptionally average. The thing is, average is not enough. My parents have three kids, all of which have pursued or plan to pursue a college education. Despite my parent's best efforts, it is not realistic to be able to send three kids to college and keep a roof over our heads.
My dream is to be able to conduct and pioneer research in the chemical field, this dream was made that much more possible by the FOSSI foundation. Their support both financially and academically have transformed my dreams into goals. Now, I can dream bigger.
FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.
- I am a huge Hamilton fan.
- I love roller-skating and reading (huge fantasy nerd).
- Trying new foods and learning how to cook them is my favorite pastime.
- I am a die hard Eagles fan (I bleed green).
