Meet Nyla Baxter: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University

July 31, 2023

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hello! My name is Nyla Baxter, and I'm from Stone Mountain, Georgia. I graduated from Arabia Mountain High School as the Magnet Valedictorian! I also had the opportunity to serve as the SGA President, National Honor Society President, Technology Student Association Treasurer, and Miss Arabia Mountain High School. Additionally, I was a member of the Dekalb County Superintendent Student Advisory Council, AMHS Beta Club, Student Ambassador Program, and Marching Band. I enjoy public speaking and volunteering in the community.

I will pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering so that I will be able to have a positive impact on society and help people solve their problems using science and technology.

In the fall, I will attend North Carolina A&T State University as an Honors College student majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Multimedia Journalism. My favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13, “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me!”

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

I was passionate about solving problems and helping others at a very young age. I learned about the STEM field in 4th Grade when I attended the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (a.k.a. SEEK). SEEK is a summer camp through the National Society of Black Engineers that inspired me to pursue a career in the STEM field, specifically in engineering. Since that camp, my career goals have focused on achieving success in the engineering field. I will pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering so that I will be able to have a positive impact on society and help people solve their problems using science and technology.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In 10 years, I see myself with a Ph.D. in an engineering related field. I also see myself on the brink of having my own organization where I teach children in my community about pursuing a career in the STEM field.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • My first name, Nyla, means "champion" or "one who achieves" in Arabic. My middle name, Christina, means "follower of Christ" in Latin. So in other words, my name indicates that I'm a champion because I follow Christ! :)
  • My favorite colors are burgundy and rose gold.
  • My favorite food is crab legs!
  • I'm a public speaker, and I've competed at the state and national level!
