Meet Zoey Johnson: 2022 FOSSI Scholar Attending Spelman College

June 13, 2023

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Zoey Jianna Johnson. I have lived in Atlanta, Georgia since I was five years old and have four siblings. I plan to go to Spelman College and engage in the dual degree program which involves earning a bachelor's degree from Spelman College in Physics and a bachelor’s at Georgia Tech in mechanical engineering. I love learning more about automobiles and I dream of working in the automotive industry to develop ground-breaking technology. I am also passionate about learning more about the STEM industry and new advancements in companies such as Lockheed Martin or Amazon. I am a dedicated and hardworking student who loves to encourage others when I have the opportunity.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I would have earned my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Bachelor's degree in Physics at Spelman. I would be on the path to earning my Ph.D. in Engineering. I would be able to fully pursue my studies and empower young women to implement social change in technology. In ten years, I would have established an organization that will help young women of color gain vital knowledge and experience as they explore computer science careers. I would be instructing young female trainees on how to develop their robotics and software technologies. As I continue my organization, I would empower young women of color to pursue rigorous professional development opportunities with technology firms. I would be on the path to becoming an influential leader in STEM and erasing the societal barriers that exist within the technology industry.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

I love to volunteer and help others by either doing community work or tutoring. Being the president of many national STEM clubs has helped fuel my enthusiasm for volunteer work and service. I am a determined and persistent hard worker and student. Not only do I strive to finish the task at hand, but I seek to learn something on the way. My strengths are being an organizer, a leader, and a motivator. Not only will I work for what I need, but I also encourage others to do the same on the way. I love to teach, encourage, and help others and learn something new along the way.
