Meet Gianni Phillips: 2021 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State

June 23, 2022

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Gianni Phillips and I was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Prince George’s County Maryland. I recently graduated from the Science and Technology Program at Oxon Hill High School. My passion for chemistry was ignited through the Science and Technology program. It started during my sophomore year chemistry class, as my teacher provided engaging labs, rigorous assignments, and concept driven tasks. It was primarily the engaging labs that piqued my interest in chemistry and chemical reactions.

This new found interest not only pushed me to excel in my chemistry class that year, but drove me to take advanced placement chemistry in my next academic year. Throughout my high school journey, I was involved in several clubs and organizations; from creating and leading French club in my sophomore year to becoming the president of the Science National Honor Society during my senior year. Outside of school, I really enjoy traveling with my family and watching action movies.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In 10 years, I see myself with a Ph.D. in chemistry, starting my career as a chemist.

Through a career in chemistry, I will strive to better my generation's advancements with chemical development, chemical reactions, and chemical usage.

I will continuously challenge my academic thinking by collaborating and brainstorming with scientists to further our world’s understanding of the evolving planet.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • I love crabs (Maryland blue crabs).
  • Fast and the Furious is my favorite movie series.
  • My favorite candy is plain M&M’s.
  • I love to bake.
