Evaluation of Ccus Pilots in China

Although many CO2 Capture, Utilization, Storage (CCUS) has been studied in laboratory, few has been tested in actual field in China. Evaluation of previous typical CCUS pilots are presented. CO2-EOR is the most attractive CCUS technology in China because it improves the benefits and reduces the cost. Up to present, 44 pilots have been conducted in China. 26 CO2-EOR pilots have been conducted by SINOPEC, while 18 by CNPC. 6 typical pilots conducted in Jilin, Daqing, Shengli, Huadong, Zhongyuan and Jinbian are both technically and economically evaluated. CO2-EOR pilots are both technically and economically successful and CO2-EOR in Jilin Oilfield is most mature in China since CO2 flooding is used commercially. Up to April 2019, there are five demonstration CCS-EOR projects in Jilin, covering 65 injectors and 318 producers. Annual CO2 injection is 1.42 million ton and incremental oil is 131 thousand tons. Incremental oil recovery factor is 20% OOIP. 2 large scale semi-commercial CO2 flooding tests (Bei 14 and Shu 101) are active in Daqing low permeability blocks and CO2 flooding oil accounts for 10%. Gao89-1 in Shengli is the largest scale test in Shengli. 24 wells are involved and the technical result is not as good as expected. CO2-EOR in Zhongyuan is very attractive since captured CO2 from chemical plants is injected. Produced CO2 is reinjected into reservoir. 1million CO2 is captured. The economical performance is good. CO2-EOR in Jinbian is not as good as expected, due to insufficient CO2 injected and no CO2 capture device at wellhead. The only CO2 storage in saline layer project carried out by Shenghua was stopped after injection 300000 tons CO2 for three years. The only CO2 enhanced coalbed methane (CO2-ECBM) pilot finished in 2004 got technical success but no economic success. 99% injected CO2 is storage in coalbed.
