Case study modules for use in a Particle Technology class have been developed on the topics of Particle Stopping Distance and Settling Velocity as well as on Grain Processing and Explosions. Both modules use a real-world example and lead the students through the processes and the related topics involved. These modules were introduced into a Particle Technology elective course in Fall 2016 and received positive feedback from the students in the class. Unlike the more typical case studies such as those presented at the end of "Introduction to Particle Technology" by Martin Rhodes, these case studies are meant to have the students take an active role in the decision making process based on data available to them without knowledge of what actually happened up front. Eventually, after teams make some assumptions, calculations, or decide on an action, the results from the specific case study and how it played-out are presented to them for further discussion. In this talk, the modules will be demonstrated and explained as well as the various pedagogical methods used. Discussion of alternate methods and pedagogies for presentation will also be explored.
