Pelleted catalysts have been the standard for steam methane reforming for hydrogen production for over 60 years. While these pelleted catalysts have greatly improved over time, there are still limitations in efficient heat transfer within the SMR and the difficult balance between activity and pressure drop. The use of stackable structured reactors, SSR, is redefining SMR performance by breaking down heat transfer inefficiencies. The design of the SSR enhances the activity as compared to pelleted catalysts and manages the pressure drop over long lifecycles. These improvements are providing hydrogen plant operators with increased hydrogen production and improving fuel efficiency in their existing plants. The presentation will discuss the SSR technology, how it provides these improvements, and will review its experiences.
