The application of Sandwich Packing, a column packing technology developed by BASF, offers an efficient alternative when increasing the hydraulic capacity of a plant without detrimental effects in terms of separation efficiency. Sandwich Packing is particularly of interest for the capacity increase of existing columns.

This work addresses the successful performance of the Sandwich Packing Technology in a Butadiene Extraction Unit of full-commercial scale. Experience and results from the operation of several years at BASF’s Butadiene Extraction Plant in Germany is now available and will be presented.
