Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is an essential first step for developing the energy efficiency, alternate energy and carbon-management technologies. Globally CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) is actively pursued as part of the carbon-management program. E3Tec has developed a process for conversion of CO2 to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and performed detailed C-footprint, which is a first step to full implementation of LCA. DMC and its derivatives are high-value specialty chemicals with major applications in manufacturing polycarbonates, as low VOC solvent, in lithium-ion batteries, and as an intermediate in manufacturing polyurethane. DMC is also evaluated as diesel fuel additive to reduce pollution. An Excel-based C-footprint model was linked to ASPEN Plus® process analysis via a Process Block Diagram (PBD). The PBD which clearly defined the Inside Battery Limit (ISBL) and Outside Battery Limit (OSBL) components and subsystems. C-footprint of the ISBL process was based on the ASPEN Plus® simulation, while that of OSBL components was based on the literature database. This C-footprint analysis facilitated the CO2 conversion process by identifying components and/or subsystem that could be further developed to enhance the overall energy efficiency and hence reduce C-footprint. The analysis is being extended for an integrated process of CO2 capture and conversion to alkyl carbonates.
