(37b) Accelerating Time to Value By Integrating Smart Technology and Business Operations

Authors

As smart manufacturing technologies have proliferated in factories, business operations have struggled to keep pace with the new requirements these technologies present. With advanced manufacturing systems come demands on sourcing, maintenance, scheduling, information management, human resource and financial functions. Automation offers higher levels of throughput and process consistency. But it can come at a cost. Raw materials may need to be delivered to tighter tolerances. Information on pedigree may need to be provided to smart analytics. Reduced operator touch time might be replaced by increased technical skill to troubleshoot equipment or monitor quality through real time charting. Few suppliers of advanced technologies are equipped to understand these critical business demands, let alone incorporate new requirements into their designs. The result is a protracted period of debug and redesign after equipment is delivered and accepted by factories, characterized by higher scrap rates, increase labor cost and missed schedules. This presentation will offer a different approach to developing advanced manufacturing systems that achieves rapid return on investment by including business outcomes in the development. Examples will be provided that show how integration of business operations and system design achieved better performance in less time.
