(63n) Improving High Shear Rate Friction Reduction Behavior of Polyacrylamide-Based Fracturing Fluids Using Xanthan Gum

The main component of slickwater in fracturing low permeability formations is a high molar mass polymer such as polyacrylamide (PAM), which acts as a drag reduction agent in turbulent flow. Polyacrylamide does not degrade in the environment and also suffers from mechanical degradation at high turbulent flow rates. Five different concentrations of PAM as well as mixtures of polyacrylamide/xanthan were prepared to investigate the possibility of improving shear stability of PAM. Drag reduction measurements were performed in a flow loop and friction factors at different flow rates were calculated using rheological parameters. Based on the observations, Xanthan (XG) is not as good a friction reducer as PAM, even at three-fold higher concentration. XG slightly improved the shear stability in mixed polymer solutions at low concentrations. But at high concentrations, XG significantly improves the friction reduction behavior of PAM at nonionic and ionic environments.
