In the USA large and small industrial organizations provide many engineering services, and they design, build and commission facilities in North America and globally.  Standards and practices for continuing professional competency (CPC) vary for all aspects of the profession including engineering skills, ethics and social responsibility.  ABET has increasing taken a role of adding these types of requirements to undergraduate chemical engineering programs.  The recent policy statement by AIChE and ASME on the Industrial Exemption could be considered a compromise among industry and society and the engineers.  This presentation will give one view of a licensed PE who has worked in organizations as small as two engineers to the largest ones in the world doing research to ECP to plant operations.  Often, the hurdles to an engineer’s obtaining a license are the exams to show engineering skills competency.
