Safety Of Intended Chemistries

Much of the chemical and petrochemical industries are in the business of reacting two or more chemicals together to form a product. This intended chemistry can be inherently hazardous depending on the properties of the reactants and products, as well as the characteristics of the reaction. Further, competing chemistries such as side reactions, scale-up and decomposition reactions can add unforeseen hazards. Many catastrophic reactive chemical incidents have been the result of intended chemistry gone wrong. This session of the Center for Chemical Process Safety Symposium, at the 2014 Global Congress on Process Safety, invites papers describing processes for managing chemical reaction safety for intended chemistries. This might include theoretical, bench top, screening and comprehensive testing requirements, the potential hazards of runaway reactions, safety-related scale-up issues, testing data interpretation, and safety system design.
