Dr. Jim Fair’s contributions to the distillation technology will not be forgotten.  The books, handbook chapters, papers and articles that he authored and coauthored while he was at Monsanto and at the University of Texas at Austin formed, in essence, the basis of many of the things that we know today about trays, random packings and structured packings.  He, his colleagues and his graduate students provided invaluable information regarding capacities, pressure drops, efficiencies, scale-up, dualflow, cocurrent flow, debottlenecking and direct-contact heat transfer.  The models and correlations that were developed are still quoted globally regularly.  Dr. Fair will be missed – globally, regularly.
