As hydrogen becomes more and more important as clean fuel and basic raw material for petroleum refining and chemical processes, a new process is being under investigation for hydrogen production named ReSER (Reactive Sorption Enhanced Reforming) Process, which is based on Ni as catalytic material and CaO as adsorbent aimed at shifting the reaction equilibrium prefer to hydrogen yield. This paper describes the preparation and evaluation of a sorption complex catalyst containing Ni and CaO. A nano-CaCO3 material used as precursor of CaO followed by CO2 adsorption during the steam reforming reaction showed its advantage in a significant improvement of the sorption capacity and durability for cyclic runs in carbonations and calcinations. The physical properties tested by SEM and XRD indicated a nano- CaO can resist the sintering than the conventional CaO at high temperature carbonations and calcinations. The CO2 sorption properties measured by a thermal gravimetric analyzer showed a sorption rate over 68% after 50 cyclic runs at 600°C carbonations and 750°C calcinations. The evaluation of the sorption complex catalyst for ReSER resulted in the high hydrogen yield over 95% (v/v) both in the fixed bed and fixed fluidized bed reactor in bench scale. The sorption catalyst has an attractive prospect in application on ReSER process for hydrogen production, especially in the fluidized mode where reactor and regenerator combined in a cyclic process.
