As a new kind of rotating equipment, rotating zigzag bed (RZB) is structurally unique and is of many superior features. RZB is characterized by a rotor coaxially combining a rotational disc with an immobile one. Two series of concentric circular sheets are fixed on the rotational disc and immobile disc respectively,one series as rotational baffles and the other immobile baffles. These baffles are assembled together with each alternate sheets staggered in a vertical direction by about 15mm with respect to adjacent sheets. This arrangement of the baffle sheets provides zigzag flow channels for gas and liquid phase. Compared with conventional rotating packed bed (RPB), RZB could do without liquid distributor and reduce one dynamic-seal, especially easily accomplish intermediate feed in distillation process. RZB also could effectively increase the contact time of gas and liquid phase, thus causing enhancement in mass transfer. In this paper, RZB and its hydrodynamic and mass transfer performance as well as applications were presented.
