Large commercial facilities would have several thousand people working inside a multi-floor building. An emergency situation resulting from a chemical, biological or radiological (CBR) contaminant release may place the health and safety of the personnel at high risk. Mitigation measures are necessary to protect the personnel. These measures include air cleaning systems for efficient and timely removal of gaseous and particulate contamination. A design approach for incorporating air cleaning systems into the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system for the building is described in detail. Particulate filtration and carbon filtration options are discussed with particular attention to their location in inlet, exhaust or return air lines based on specific situations. Design criteria for sealing, removal efficiency, air inlet location and rate of air changes are also discussed. Cost impacts for adding carbon filters are discussed and measures are identified to reduce operating cost.
