With increasing LNG activity around the globe, LNG import terminals will be required to accept LNG from various sources. Natural gas specifications for North American markets generally require LNG with a lower BTU content that is limited in supply. Removal of C2+ NGL may be necessary to allow import of rich LNG to North America. Production of ethane and LPG plus hydrocarbons from the imported LNG may also be economically attractive, especially where ethane can be sold as a petrochemical plant feedstock. This paper discusses a flexible integrated LNG Conditioning and NGL extraction process that is designed to operate without impacting the main LNG regasification facility. This process efficiently utilizes the LNG cold to provide reflux and condensation for the C2 + NGL fractionation, requiring very low energy consumption. The unit can be operated in ethane recovery, ethane rejection or variable ethane recovery while maintaining 99% propane recovery for all operations. In addition, the design allows on-the-fly changeover from ethane recovery to ethane rejection or vise versa, allowing the facility to accommodate fluctuating ethane demand. The design features and operation of the patented process will be described for several LNG feedstocks from different parts of the world, with heating values ranging from 1080 BTU/scf to 1250 BTU/scf. The methodology to meet different pipeline gas specifications and ethane recovery production rates will also be discussed. The capital and operating costs of this design for a 2 BSCFD LNG receiving terminal will be disclosed.
