Conventional jet fuels derived from fossil sources not only emit substantial carbon dioxide but also contribute to global warming. Consequently, there is a pressing need for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) that can significantly reduce emissions and promote environmental stewardship. This presentation will discuss about the processes to convert methanol (C1) and ethanol (C2) as intermediates feedstocks for SAF production, utilizing thermochemical conversion technologies. These alcohols can be sourced from a range of renewable feedstocks, including biomass, agricultural waste, and carbon capture and utilization processes. Through the employment of advanced thermochemical conversion techniques, such as dehydration and oligomerization, these alcohols can be efficiently transformed into hydrocarbon-based fuels suitable for aviation applications. The thermochemical approach offers notable advantages, including high conversion and carbon efficiency, compatibility with existing infrastructure, and the potential for large-scale implementation. This presentation will also discuss the ongoing efforts and research needs in developing SAF solutions.
