Conventional lithium batteries using an organic polymer electrolyte, exhibit several safety issues including leakage, poor chemical stability and flammability. To address these safety concerns the idea of a solid electrolyte has emerged. In the lab we specifically focused on the solid garnet-type electrolytes. The solid electrolyte of Li6.28Al0.24La3Zr2O12 and Li7.28Al0.24La3Zr2O12 (LALZO) powder were successfully synthesized by a co-precipitation method. LALZOpellets were then sintered at 1100 °C at different sintering times of 4,8, and 16 hours. With the lithium content of 7.28 per formula, impurity of La2O3 was obtained at the sintering time of 4 hours. When the sintering time increased to 8 and 16 hours, in addition to the La2O3, La2Zr2O7 phase was obtained. When the lithium content decreased to 6.28 per formula, impurities of La2O3 and La2Zr2O7 were obtained. The lattice parameters are all similar for different lithium content and different sintering times and are within the range of 12.93-12.97Å.
