Processing Brazilian Pre-salt crudes has already become a reality for PETROBRAS and Brazil. Just 10 years after startup, Pre-salt oil reached half the volume produced by PETROBRAS and is expected to keep on growing. These oils present intermediate API gravity, low naphthenic acidity, low sulphur and intermediate nitrogen contents. Their paraffinicity favors FCC conversion, naphtha quality, higher cetane and higher API gravity diesel; and its low sulphur resid fractions boost bunker production. Parallel to the expansion in Pre-salt production, PETROBRAS has gained experience in refining these crudes in several domestic refineries and has therefore customized a set of operational best practices and technical guidelines to achieve the best results for their processing. This poster will highlight technical challenges faced and successful solutions adopted by PETROBRAS Refining for processing Pre-salt Crudes.
