CO-containing emissions are environmentally harmful, and for PEM fuel cells a trace amount of CO leads to precious metal catalyst poisoning; therefore, separation/removal of CO is highly demanded. Cuprous chloride, due to the presence of Cu (I) ion, is a promising CO adsorption medium. Many attempts have been made to synthesize CuCl-decorated adsorbent to achieve highly selective adsorption of CO from gas mixture stream; however, less attention has been paid to the effect of CuCl crystal morphology. We conducted CO adsorption under a dynamic condition to understand how different crystallographic planes of CuCl affect selectivity and capacity of CO adsorption. The solid copper substrates were reacted with dissolved CuCl2 in a variety of solvents for shape engineering. The adsorption behavior of the prepared samples was investigated using CO pulse injection and breakthrough curve analysis. In addition, the cation dopant effect was studied for CO adsorption. It was found that the dopants in the reacting solution also change the growth mode of the CuCl crystals.
