This work presents a study on the physical and chemical properties of a broad range of organic and inorganic materials having good affinity with water. These include polymers and minerals. The results demonstrate the possibility to efficiently exploit the hygroscopic properties of these materials to store water vapor under various relative humidity and temperature conditions. In a subsequent process, liquid water can be produced through an isothermal cycle. Furthermore, we implement a heat and mass exchanger that can regenerate the desiccant materials at reasonable temperatures below 50 °C, which is easily achievable with solar energy.
