Industry 4.0 represents a new trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies and fosters the concept of a "smart factory". Within this framework cyber-physical systems monitor physical processes, create a virtual copy of the physical world and make decentralized decisions. This talk provides an overview of modern optimization optimization tools and solution strategies within this distributed decision-making process. In contrast to current engineering tools which are based on simulation models and expand to optimization, we describe the development of more advanced decision-making tools that start with an optimization model and flesh out the details of the process. In particular, we highlight the development of equation oriented optimization platforms with fast solvers, advanced modeling environments and efficient interfaces between them. Moreover, we extend these features to NLP sensitivity, nonsmooth models and data-driven models. Finally, we explore the application of these tools for distributed optimization, optimization under uncertainty and the integration of design, operations and control.
