Shao, M. - Presenter, The University of Kansas
The University of Kansas (KU) Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering (C&PE) is integrating Aspen Plus® into its core chemical engineering courses from Freshman to Senior year. The aim of this integration is to supplement the teaching of traditional course material and homework problems, while providing a marketable skill for chemical engineering students post-graduation. This presentation will highlight current methods of introducing Aspen Plus® into the curriculum, which include online videos, written handouts, lecture notes, and homework assignments. The presentation will demonstrate how the videos were created using Camtasia Studio 9® screen capture software, as well as the advantages of using this innovative tool for instruction and enhancing the learning experience. Student surveys will be discussed, which have assessed the effectiveness, interest, and performance of using Aspen Plus® in the classroom. Ultimately, the goal of the speaker (Junior C&PE undergraduate) is to fully implement Aspen Plus® into the 4-year chemical engineering curriculum at KU for current and future students, in addition to creating an online library of videos available to all students taking chemical engineering courses.
