Switchable Tertiary Amines can be used to capture carbon dioxide. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) examined the Carbon Dioxide Removal and Water Recycling (COHO) system for use in recycling spacecraft wastewater (e.g. urine) and at the same time remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from cabin air. The system uses forward osmosis (FO) membranes and the 1-cyclohexylpyridine as the osmotic agent. This paper described the results from a bench scale system. Initial results indicated that the integrated system perform the CO2 removal and water recycling function, however, the CO2 uptake is too slow at atmospheric pressure.
