Nowadays, In FCC process, ZSM-5 uses as an efficient additive to increase light olefins yield, in particular propylene. Propylene is one of the most important building blocks for the petrochemicals Industry. The demand for propylene is growing and its market is expanding. Market analysis show that the demand for propylene is growing faster than that for ethylene and the current supply cannot fulfill the demand. This review aims to highlight the recent and the most important modification methods applied for improving ZSM-5 performance in the FCC process to increase the yield of light olefins in general with a focus on maximizing the production of propylene. These methods include the modification of acidity and particle size, synthesis of mesoporous/ hierarchical ZSM-5 structure, phosphorus treatment, introduction of rare-earth metal and incorporation of alkali metals and transition metals.
