Building competency in process safety is critical to the success of process safety management programs in the process industry. This involves teaching the fundamentals of process safety to young engineers which can be challenging given the importance and the complexity of the topic. Academia has a central role to play in this area by incorporating process safety in curriculums for engineering students and by supporting the industry in the training young engineers through continuing education programs.

This presentation will summarize the experiences gained from teaching process safety under the umbrella of the Qatar branch of the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center young professionals in the Middle East. It will discuss how academic and research activities can be used as opportunities to practice the principles of Process Safety Management in support of conventional process safety courses. Finally, this presentation will provide two-year’s experience on how academia can team up with industry to provide higher quality and strong continuing education programs in process safety beyond the short courses.
