(375j) Particle Size Techniques/Capabilities Used in the Coatings Industry

Particle size distribution plays an important role in the coatings industry as it affects many paint properties including rheology and optical properties. Three techniques that PPG commonly utilizes for particle size characterization are dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser diffraction, and centrifugation sedimentation. This presentation will focus on each particle size technique, as well as demonstrate the importance of the optical parameters needed for each technique and how to choose the appropriate analysis for an application. Several case studies involving latex particle characterization with DLS and pigment analysis with centrifugation sedimentation will also be highlighted.
