Membranes have a key role in water purification. Their relevance for chemical separations is growing. While reverse osmosis is well-established for decades, the development of multilayer membranes has been essential to promote the implementation of processes such as nanofiltration, forward and pressure retarded osmosis in emerging fields of application.1, 2 The collaboration between our group at KAUST and Chung’s group at NUS has been focused on new materials for hollow fibers and flat-sheet membranes with selective layers added by dip-coating, interfacial polymerization and surface functionalization by grafting.3-6 Tailoring selectivity and permeance, improving fouling resistance, tuning shape and porosity of hollow fibers and the exploring new materials for interfacial polymerization, such as dendrimers, porphyrin and zwitterionic segments, are among the more recent developments in our group.7-11
