(229a) Experiences of Embedding Safety throughout a Chemical Engineering Program

The Department of Chemical Engineering at University College London has recently gone through a restructuring of its undergraduate programs and are now providing an Integrated Engineering Program (IEP) which has a strong focus on inter-disciplinary skills, research-led teaching and project-based learning. At the heart of the program still lies the key fundamentals: a thorough understanding of engineering fundamentals, a strong focus on team working and professional skills, and above all, a way of thinking and a culture that considers safety and sustainability as the core of every activity. How this safety learning is imparted to engineering students in an academic environment can be a challenge for educators, particularly when the activities are to be integrated and coordinated across an entire program. We will describe our experiences of implementing such a program-wide focus, and reflect on the first four years of its implementation.
