Surface modification for anti-fouling treatment is important for some biomedical devices. However, many methods for conjugation of anti-fouling materials are substrate-dependent. In this presentation, we will introduce a simple one-step coating method based on self-polymerization of small molecules, such as dopamine, aminomalononitrile or polyphenols. Amine-containing anti-fouling polymers could be co-deposited onto a wide variety of substrates during the self-polymerization process. We showed that cell adhesion and protein adsorption would be greatly decreased on the anti-fouling substrates. Some coatings are very robust and resistant to autoclave sterilization. We expect that the strategy for anti-fouling coatings is applicable in manufacturing medical devices.
