Hydroxyl groups are proved being crucial for CO oxidation. Alkaline metal is used to stabilize the Pt (Au) atom and introduce abundant hydroxyl group at the same time. CO was weakly bounded to single cationic atom, which makes the single atom catalysts more active towards CO oxidation. Inferior H2 oxidation reactivity of single atom compared to extended surface promotes the higher selectivity of O2 towards CO oxidation.
