Abstract

In the present work we present a study of the elimination of the herbicide Glyphosate by the photo-Fenton process using Mexican natural zeolite impregnated with Fe. Because this herbicide is widely used in agriculture for the removal of grasses and shrubs in maize crops. However, because of their possible carcinogenic effect for humans, alternatives should be sought for their disposal of liquid effluents.

The impregnation of Fe on the natural zeolite in acid solution at pH 2.5, using FeCl3 as iron source was performed. The impregnated mineral was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in order to observe the present iron species, because the natural zeolite contains in its structure compounds with iron before being impregnated.

Finally, the impregnated natural zeolite was used in the degradation of the herbicide in solution by means of the photo Fenton process, which searches to improve the elimination of Glyphosate and to obtain byproducts of less environmental impact.
