5-Ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) is a new kind of liquid biofuel, which has a high energy density and excellent combustion properties, and has been considered as one of the promising next-generation biofuels. In this paper, ultra low concentration of sulfuric acid (0.001mol L-1) was used as catalyst to catalyze cellulose and ethanol to produce EMF in one-pot reaction. The effects of temperature, reaction time and substrate concentration on EMF yield were firstly studied and then the response surface methodology experiments were designed to optimize the reaction conditions. The interactions of factors and the optimum reaction conditions were obtained. The results showed that the reaction time and reaction temperature were the factors that mostly impacted the one-pot production from cellulose and ethanol catalyzed by ultra low mass concentration sulfuric acid. The interactions of two factors on the EMF yield were all significant (P<0.005). The maximum mean EMF yield of 14.35% was obtained under the optimum reaction conditions: reaction temperature 200℃,reaction time 60min and substrate concentration 20g/L, with the prediction error of 5.35%. This study could provide research foundation for the EMF one-pot production from much cheaper and more abundant biomass resource catalyzed by ultra low mass concentration sulfuric acid.
