Advanced energy technologies are usually developed to meet emerging goals in stationary power, transportation, or aerospace applications. Research efforts typically focus on meeting energy goals such as efficiency, emissions, and cost. Less attention is given to possible “derivative” technologies where advances in energy conversion could also produce benefits for chemical conversion. This presentation will describe new developments in energy conversion that may also provide advantages for chemical production and process intensification. The talk will discuss emerging energy technologies—continuous detonation engines, cold plasmas, rotating fluid beds—and describe how they may benefit both energy and chemical conversion needs.
