New researchers in the computational sciences face common activation barriers to authentically participating in distributed project development. In this workshop we discuss strategies for efficiently overcoming these barriers informed by the pedagogical literature for how students learn to programming and how scientists manage code. This hands-on session focuses specifically on examples with command-line-interfaces (bash), version control (git), and python that will be used throughout the day's workshop. This introduction is targeted at graduate students new to the computational sciences and will be equally useful to faculty and postdocs looking for a refresher or who serve in computational mentoring roles.
